RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Nebraska man who vanished for a time with his wife and children earlier this year has pleaded not guilty to charges in South Dakota’s Pennington County, where he is accused of stealing a fire department truck.
Matthew Schade is charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, grand theft and petty theft.
Matthew and Rowena Schade vanished with their children from their Creighton, Neb., home in March after being questioned on domestic abuse allegations. They turned themselves in 18 days later, after being the subjects of a search in South Dakota’s Black Hills.
Rowena Schade faces a grand theft charge in South Dakota.
Prosecutors say Matthew Schade has three separate burglary convictions in Nebraska. He was sentenced last month in Nebraska to up to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a gun. That is to be served at the same time as other sentences, including a 12- to 36-month term he received in June for violating probation.
