LINCOLN — In 2008, the Nebraska volleyball team barely had any options at setter. By 2010, the Huskers look to be loaded at the position.
Kristen Kelsay, a senior at St. Francis High School in suburban Chicago, pledged to Nebraska and will join the team next year, the Daily Herald of Illinois reported Wednesday. Other schools recruiting the 5-foot-9 Kelsay included Northwestern, Notre Dame and Virginia.
Kelsay told the newspaper she expects to help run a 6-2 offense at Nebraska.
“I've run a 5-1 and a 6-2,” Kelsay told the Daily Herald, “so I'm comfortable with both. I'm not the biggest setter, so it's fine with me.”
Nebraska has three setters on its 2009 roster, and all of them can return next year. Starting setter Sydney Anderson is a junior, as is Penn State transfer Jessica Yanz. Walk-on Brigette Root, from Grand Island, Neb., is a sophomore.
Morgan Broekhuis, a versatile 6-foot-5 standout from Colorado Springs, Colo., also committed to NU for 2010. She'll come to Lincoln with extensive experience at both outside hitter and setter.
Omaha Marian sophomore Lauren Sieckmann, one of the top setting prospects for the college class of 2012, announced last month that she had accepted a scholarship offer from the Huskers.
