The Crescendo Concert Series is celebrating its 10th anniversary in high style.

On Sunday, the popular classical series at Dundee Presbyterian Church opens its fall season with Thomas Wilkins leading the Omaha Symphony.

The orchestra, a frequent guest of the series, will present mostly works that it has played at the church over the past decade.

“The idea is to celebrate Crescendo’s history,” Wilkins said.

The concert will also showcase several of the orchestra’s principal players.

Concertmaster Amy Sims will join principal second violinist Keith Plenert and cellist Paul Ledwon for Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso in D minor. Sims and Plenert will also perform Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor.

“We’re going to try and create more a period sound in our performances of the Bach and Vivaldi,” Sims said. “Music in Bach’s and Vivaldi’s day had a lighter texture with peppy tempos.”

The orchestra will also perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 and one modern piece, Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas’ “Ocho por Radio” (Eight on the Radio).

“The Revueltas is a fun, lively Mexican piece,” Wilkins said.

“People are going to get a kick out of it.”
