Mary Carol Garrity, proprietor of Nell Hill’s, with home furnishings locations in Atchison, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., will be on hand from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Brandeis Mansion to autograph her new book, “Nell Hill’s O Christmas Tree.” The Designer Showhouse continues through Sunday at 500 S. 38th St. Showhouse admission is $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door.

Need to winterize? Want to decorate? Eager to meet Food Network newcomer Aaron McCargo Jr. of “Big Daddy’s House”?

Then you’ll want to attend the 21st annual Fall Home and Garden Expo at Qwest Center Omaha. The expo will present a Green Pavilion of conservation, recycling and eco-friendly strategies, plus room design galleries, remodeling experts and landscape professionals. The expo will offer more than 400 home-related displays.

McCargo will be on the show’s main stage at 8 p.m. Friday, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Expo hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults and free to children ages 12 and younger.

Autumn Ambience and Japanese Ambience will kick off the annual fall chrysanthemum show at Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha’s Botanical Center, 100 Bancroft St. The weekend opens with the mum show in the floral display hall, featuring 34 varieties of single-stemmed mums, various forms of cascade mums and traditional Japanese garden design. See 6-foot-tall mums with 7-inch-diameter blossoms. A members’ event Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. will feature luminaries and live Japanese music. The festival will include hayrack rides, scarecrow-making and other family-centered events. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nonmember admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 to 12.


Oct. 10

The Douglas County Historical Society is conducting an oral history workshop, with the oral histories conducted by youths with a friend, parent or grandparent. The event is open to the public. Members of the Historical Society’s Early Settlers Club are invited to attend as part of their annual reunion. Pre-registration is required in order to schedule the time for interviews. Contact Education Director Dan Spegel at 451-1013, ext. 109.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Building 10 at Fort Omaha, 30th and Fort Streets. The interviews are free as part of the historical society’s educational programming and historical research. A CD recording of the interviews will be available for $10. Selected interviews will be presented on a pre-published schedule on weekends during “19th Century Holidays.”
