Football: Q&A with John Elway

Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway was in Omaha on Tuesday night for the annual Sports Night at Creighton Prep. In an interview with The World-Herald, the 49-year-old talked about several topics — life in Denver, his former Broncos team and a certain ageless quarterback now playing for Minnesota.

Q: Have you ever been to Nebraska?

A: I don’t think I’ve ever been here. Our team (Stanford) almost made it to the College World Series one year but came up short.

Q: What do you think about Denver’s 4-0 start this year?

A: It’s obviously a pretty big surprise. They’re really playing hard, and it seems like they’ve got the right chemistry.

Q: What are your thoughts on first-year coach Josh McDaniels?

A: He’s been through a lot already, especially with the Cutler situation. It’s still early, but you can’t argue with a 4-0 record.

Q: What did you think about Denver trading (quarterback) Jay Cutler to the Bears?

A: The situation just got to the point where it was irreparable. It had to be done, and I think Denver made a pretty decent deal.

Q: What do you think about what Brett Favre is doing with the Vikings?

A: The guy is amazing. Watching him (Monday) night was just an awesome display. But I hope we don’t have to go through all of that retirement stuff with him again someday.

Q: Do you still live in Denver?

A: Yes.

Q: What’s that like?

A: Since I’ve been there for 25 years, I think I’ve met everybody in the city at least once.

Q: Did you hear the comments by Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis? He said there are too many rules to protect quarterbacks today.

A: It’s gotten to the point where referees are inconsistent, and it’s taken away from the integrity of the game. (Pittsburgh linebacker) Jack Lambert always said quarterbacks should have to wear a skirt. I never liked to hear that.

Q: Was Lambert the toughest guy you played against?

A: I can’t single one player out. There were a lot of great players.

Q: After losing in three previous Super Bowls, how did it feel to beat Green Bay for the title in 1997?

A: I always tell Packer fans they needed to share the wealth. We were due to win one.
