An Omaha man has been sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison for a Jan. 8 shooting that injured a man during an apparent drug deal gone bad.
Preston L. Dean, 22, must serve 10 years before he being eligible for parole. He likely will serve 15 years if he’s not paroled under the sentence handed down by Douglas County District Judge John Hartigan.
Under state sentencing guidelines, defendants serve half of their lower term before they are eligible for parole; almost all are released after serving half of the upper term.
Dean was convicted of first-degree assault and weapon use for shooting Michael S. Nordmeyer as Nordmeyer sat in a pickup truck in the parking lot of the Cimarron Hills Apartment Complex southwest of 96th and Q Streets.
Omaha police arrested the pickup’s 17-year-old driver on suspicion of possessing marijuana with the intent to deal it.
In May, Nordmeyer, 19, was sentenced to three years of probation for attempting to deal marijuana.
