Today is the deadline to preregister and pay for a tour Saturday of two examples of straw-bale building in Nebraska: a private residence in Cozad and a public visitors center in Gibbon.

Vans will leave Lincoln promptly at 8 a.m. and return to Lincoln around 6:30 p.m. Those not traveling with the group may join the tour in Cozad at 11 a.m.

A two-story straw-bale home was built in a rural setting near Cozad. The second site is the 6,700-square-foot straw-bale Iain Nicholson Nature Center at Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbon. The center, with a view of the Platte River, offers bird-watching and nature hikes.

Cost is $30 (van transportation) and $10 for those providing their own cars. To register, call Joyce Coppinger, 402-483-5135 (leave message) or e-mail jc10508@windstream.net. A $5 fee will be charged for those who want to visit the Cozad site from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during an open house. To visit during these hours, call 308-785-2193 for driving directions.
