Hog roast to follow fundraising bike ride
The Izaak Walton League of Fremont, Neb., will have a fundraising bike ride Saturday.
The ride will start at 10 a.m. at Whis’s End Zone Lounge in Fremont and end at Izaak Walton Park in Fremont. A hog roast, bonfire, raffles, live music and more will follow.
The cost is $25 per bike and $15 per passenger. Proceeds will benefit the town’s Shop With a Cop Foundation and go for improvements at the park.
It’s all downhill for derby contestants
Engines won’t be revving, but there still will be speed Saturday and Sunday at the Omaha Area Soap Box Derby Association’s third annual Monster Rally.
Racing will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday at the northwest corner of Seymour Smith Park, 72nd and Washington Streets.
Boys and girls ages 8 through 17 will compete by driving gravity-powered cars.
The event is free and open to the public. A concession stand will be available.
Food donations to be collected Oct. 17
The Salvation Army and the Girl Scouts are encouraging donations of nonperishable food items for their first Hunger Campaign.
On Saturday, Girl Scout troops in Omaha will distribute fliers asking residents to prepare a donation for pickup on Oct. 17. Items should be placed in a grocery bag and left in front of their homes. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, Girl Scouts will collect the donations.
The Nebraska event is sponsored by the Salvation Army Corps in Beatrice, Fremont, Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk and Omaha.
Benefit dinner to aid Frank Sillik’s family
Frank M. Sillik, who died five days after being struck by a car in August, will be remembered Saturday at a benefit for his family.
The spaghetti dinner and celebration of Sillik’s life will run from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Carter Lake Lounge, 1003 Locust St. in Carter Lake. Raffles will begin at 5 p.m.
An adult dinner is $10; dinner for children 7 and younger is $5. Proceeds will help pay the medical expenses of the family man, who had no health insurance.
Topic: 19th century arrivals from Wales
Emigration from Wales in the 19th century will be discussed at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Welsh Heritage Centre in Wymore, Neb.
Robert L. Tyler of Wales will speak about the Welsh émigré colony in the Patagonia region of Argentina, where he recently spent two years. And a new exhibit, “Coming to America,” will be unveiled.
Trade show tips at chamber meeting
“Getting the Most Out of a Trade Show” will be the topic Tuesday at the noon meeting of the Norfolk (Neb.) Area Chamber of Commerce.

Borge’s daughter to show documentary
Reservations are due Monday to the Danish Immigrant Museum for an Oct. 17 luncheon meeting that includes a screening of the documentary “Victor Borge: The Funniest Man in the World.”
The museum board’s annual fall gathering will be at 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Elk Horn (Iowa) Lutheran Church.
The comedian’s daughter, Janet Borge Crowle, will present the documentary. Call the museum at 712-764-7001 to make a reservation.

Landlords to discuss tenant bankruptcy
Anyone with rental properties or an interest in getting into the rental real estate business is welcome at Monday’s monthly meeting of the Omaha Landlords Association.
“What to Do When Your Tenant Files for Bankruptcy” will be the topic of the 6:45 p.m. gathering at the Westside Conference Center, 3534 S. 108th St. The meeting will be kept to about an hour, with time for questions.
UNO athletic director to speak in Dundee
Trev Alberts, athletic director of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, will speak to his employer’s neighbors at 8 p.m. Monday.
The Dundee Memorial Park Association meeting will be at Dundee Presbyterian Church, at Happy Hollow Boulevard and Underwood Avenue.
The 7:30 p.m. business meeting will follow a 7 p.m. social period.
Living history demos at Arbor Lodge
Arbor Lodge State Historical Park in Nebraska City will have living history demonstrations from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Presentations inside the manor will include china painting, life on the Overland Trail, and wagon train dolls. Presentations on the grounds will include Dutch oven cooking, Native American beadwork and cider pressing.
