Married: 1959 to Marie Giem. Three children: son, Lee G. Simmons III of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughters, Dr. Heather Simmons of Madison, Wis., and Heidi Darty of St. Louis. Six grandchildren. Five great-grandchildren.
Home: A native of Arizona. Family moved to Choctaw, Okla., when he was 13 years old.
Career:
1963: Joined the staff at Columbus (Ohio) Municipal Zoo.
1966: Joined Omaha Zoo as resident veterinarian.
1967: Named associate director.
1970: Named director.
2009: Retired as director, replaced by Dennis Pate, director of the Jacksonville, Fla., zoo. Appointed chairman of Omaha Zoo Foundation.
