Class will teach art of stage makeup
Ten- to 14-year-olds can learn the art of stage makeup in time for Halloween.
The class will run from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Council Bluffs Community Hall, 205 S. Main St.
The cost is $25, or $20 for Bluffs Arts Council members. Register by Thursday by calling 712-328-4992 or visiting www.bluffsarts.org.
The class is part of the Black Squirrel Arts program of the Bluffs Arts Council.
Luigi Waites will play free concert
Luigi Waites will give a free performance to kick off a Smithsonian Institution exhibition on roots music at Love’s Jazz & Arts Center.
The Thursday event is open to the public. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. at the center, 2510 N. 24th St.
Supply managers to hear about economy
Reservations are due Friday for the Oct. 21 meeting of the Institute for Supply Chain Management, formerly known as the National Association of Purchasing Management.
Ernie Goss of Creighton University will provide insight and opinion on current economic conditions and prospects.
The meeting will be at the Regency Lodge, 909 S. 107th Ave. Social time begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and speaker.

Hearing to consider energy conservation
The Nebraska Legislature’s Natural Resources Committee will have a public hearing Friday in Omaha on energy conservation.
Legislative Resolution 221, introduced by Sen. Pete Pirsch, will be heard at 1:30 p.m. at the Energy Plaza Auditorium, 444 S. 16th St.
LR 221 is an interim study to determine ways the state can promote energy conservation in commercial buildings and homes.
Voters league seeks award nominations
The League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha is seeking nominations for its annual Making Democracy Work Award. The award, which will honor an individual for her community activism, will be presented Feb. 11, 2010.
In the selection process, priority will be given to community leaders who creatively dedicate their time and effort to making improvements in Omaha while inspiring others to do the same. Nominations are open to any woman who is or has been part of the work force or has contributed to the community in a meaningful way.
Application forms are available at www.omahalwv.org. Applications must be received by Nov. 15.
CU choir, chorus to sing sacred music
The Creighton University Chamber Choir and University Chorus will present their first concert of the fall season at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. John Church on campus.
Titled “Sacred Music Through the Ages,” the concert will feature the work of composers such as Mozart, Brahms, Rutter, Fauré, Duruflé and others.
The concert is free to the public. Canned goods will be accepted for the Siena-Francis House.
Lecture to open CU med school series
Joel M. Linden, a leading expert on adenosine receptors, will lecture on “Adenosine, NKT Cells and Sickle Cell Anemia” at noon Wednesday as the first speaker in the 2009-10 Creighton University School of Medicine Distinguished Lecture Series.
The lecture, which is free to the public, will be in the Morrison Seminar Room at Creighton University Medical Center, 601 N. 30th St.
Course will cover disaster preparedness
The Eastern Nebraska Community Emergency Response Team will offer a free course for those 18 or older who want to learn about disaster preparedness and emergency response and become CERT certified.
Participants will receive instruction in fire safety, medical operations, light search and rescue, terrorism, communications, disaster psychology and disaster management.
The 20-hour, two-session training will be Saturday and Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Oak View Ward Church of Latter-day Saints, 14680 California St.

Free exams will check for scoliosis
