UNL students get urban farm grant

LINCOLN (AP) — A group of University of Nebraska-Lincoln students has received a $10,000 grant to develop an urban food cooperative.

The UNL students hope to persuade more city residents to grow produce and increase the availability of locally grown food.

That project is one of 43 student proposals the Environmental Protection Agency awarded funding to recently.

The students will use the grants this school year to test their ideas. Then they will present the results at the National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington D.C. and compete for grants worth up to $75,000.

Only a few projects are chosen each year to receive the larger grants.

The competition encourages college students to develop innovative ways to tackle global environmental challenges.
