Bach meets blues at Friday concert
What do you get when you cross J.S. Bach with B.B. King? The answer is Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues, which opens the Omaha Performing Arts 2009-10 season Friday at the Holland Performing Arts Center. The concert's featured guest is jazz violinist Randy Sabien.
Looking back at Nebraskan's art
He was probably better known in New York than York. Nebraska native Dan Christensen was among the country's most ambitious abstract and gestural painters. The Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln will survey Christensen's art in an exhibit opening Friday. The show will feature 35 large, dynamic canvases that span 40 years of the artist's career from 1967 to 2007.
Time for popcorn with Optimus Prime
How bad is “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”? About $400 million bad. It raised riches at the box office, but critics widely panned it. You can see for yourself on Tuesday when the flick comes out on DVD.
Tuesday, you can get your freak on
Freak is the word for this week's CD releases. The “New Moon” soundtrack from the second “Twilight” vampire movie features songs from Thom Yorke, Bon Iver and Death Cab for Cutie. Why no Vampire Weekend? Flight of the Conchords harnesses a different kind of freak on “I Told You I Was Freaky.” Both come out Tuesday.
Swank revisits Earhart's life
Nebraska native Hilary Swank has always flown high, so this is no surprise. Swank stars in “Amelia,” a biopic about pioneering 1930s aviatrix Amelia Earhart. It opens Friday. A bunch of horror highlights the rest of the new flicks: “Saw VI,” “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant” and a 3D version of “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
