Scholars plan area conference

The national conference of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation is coming to the Omaha-Council Bluffs area in 2011.

The gathering of 300 to 400 scholars and enthusiasts of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804-06 is scheduled for July 30 to Aug. 3 of that year.

Among activities planned, organizers hope to stage a re-enactment of the expedition's first diplomatic parlay with a local tribe, said Bob Pawloski of Omaha.

Pawloski is a member of the Mouth of Platte Chapter of the trail foundation and chairman of the 2011 conference.

Organizers will hold events in Omaha, Fort Atkinson State Historical Park and Nebraska City, and in Onawa and Sioux City in Iowa, Pawloski said.

Omaha hosted one of the more successful national stopover events in 2004 during the expedition's bicentennial commemoration. An estimated 65,000 people attended activities at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park near Fort Calhoun and in Omaha's Elmwood Park.

The trail foundation's conference will be in Lewiston, Idaho, next year.
