A rare copy of a John G. Neihardt book signed by the author and his wife will be among items auctioned at the annual Laureate’s Feast fundraiser next weekend.
The copy of Neihardt’s 1912 “The Stranger at the Gate’’ includes the signatures of both Neihardt and his wife, Mona.
Walt Duda of Omaha, a board member of the John G. Neihardt Foundation, said he has never before seen a Neihardt book jointly signed by the couple.
The Laureate’s Feast will be held Oct. 25 at the Fort Omaha Campus of Metropolitan Community College. Dinner will be prepared by students in Metro’s culinary arts department.
The event is open to the public, but advance reservations are required. Tickets are $100 per person, and sponsor tables are available for eight people at $1,000.
The reception, music and silent auction begin at 5 p.m. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m., followed by the live auction. Dress is business attire.
Contact the Neihardt Foundation office at 888-777-4667 in Bancroft, Neb., for more information.
This year’s Laureate’s Feast is the foundation’s 10th. Proceeds benefit the foundation and its work to perpetuate the memory of Neihardt through conferences, festivals and events.
Neihardt died in 1973 at age 92. He is best known as the author of “Black Elk Speaks,’’ about the culture and religion of the Lakota Sioux as told by tribal holy man Black Elk.
The Neihardt Center in Bancroft is a branch museum of the Nebraska State Historical Society.
