Football: Big 12 Rankings

1. Texas (6-0, 3-0)

Last week: Beat Oklahoma 16-13. Up next: at Missouri, 7 p.m., ABC. Wins over Oklahoma and Texas Tech give the Longhorns a big head start in the race for the South Division title.

2. Oklahoma State (5-1, 2-0)

Last week: Beat Missouri 33-17. Up next: at Baylor, 11:30 a.m., Versus. Don’t forget the Cowboys. They get Texas and Texas Tech at home and will be favored in two of their three road games.

3. Oklahoma (3-3, 1-1)

Last week: Lost to Texas 16-13. Up next: at Kansas, 2:30 p.m., ABC. The Sooners’ three losses have been by a combined five points, all against ranked opponents and all on the road or neutral sites.

4. Texas Tech (5-2, 2-1)

Last week: Beat Nebraska 31-10. Up next: Texas A&M, 6 p.m. Of the Red Raiders’ final five games, only one is on the road. Three are at home and one (Baylor) at a neutral site.

5. Kansas (5-1, 1-1)

Last week: Lost to Colorado 34-30. Up next: Oklahoma, 2:30 p.m., ABC. The Jayhawks learned the hard way not to dilly-dally around and think that QB Todd Reesing will automatically save them.

6. Nebraska (4-2, 1-1)

Last week: Lost to Texas Tech 31-10. Up next: Iowa State, 11:30 a.m., FSN. Your guess is as good as mine on what happens next. The only good news was other North contenders were about as bad as NU.

7. Missouri (4-2, 0-2)

Last week: Lost to Oklahoma State 33-17. Up next: Texas, 7 p.m., ABC. If QB Blaine Gabbert isn’t healthy, the Tigers struggle to win. And Gabbert’s bad ankle won’t get better hobbling around week after week.

8. Kansas State (4-3, 2-1)

Last week: Beat Texas A&M 62-14. Up next: Colorado, 11:30 a.m., FCS. Remember that KSU has to win seven games for bowl eligibility, but even getting to four wins this season is an accomplishment.

9. Iowa State (4-3, 1-2)

Last week: Beat Baylor 24-10. Up next: at Nebraska, 11:30 a.m., FSN. The Cyclones are hard-nosed, well-schooled and playing to their strengths. They will beat someone when few expect it.

10. Colorado (2-4, 1-1)

Last week: Beat Kansas 34-30. Up next: at Kansas State, 11:30 a.m., FCS. That quarterback change Buffaloes fans have wanted for 2½ years proved fruitful for at least one game.

11. Baylor (3-3, 0-2)

Last week: Lost to Iowa State 24-10. Up next: Oklahoma State, 11:30 a.m., Versus. The Big 12’s longest bowl drought looks like it will climb to 16 seasons. Injuries have defanged the Bears.

12. Texas A&M (3-3, 0-2)

Last week: Lost to Kansas State 62-14. Up next: at Texas Tech, 6 p.m. The Aggie message-board posters can’t decide whom to be more mad at: coach Mike Sherman or Athletic Director Bill Byrne.
