Luncheon features legislative update
Attend Wednesday’s Bellevue Chamber of Commerce Business to Business Luncheon to hear an update on the Nebraska Legislature.
The Nebraska Chamber of Commerce will give an update on issues for the 2010 legislative session and the special session.
Lunch will be at La Mesa, 1405 Fort Crook Road South, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost: $15 members, $20 nonmembers.

Deadline nears for north Omaha grants
You have until 3 p.m. on Nov. 16 to apply for grants to fund cultural or historical projects in north Omaha. Get an application at the Douglas County Commissioners Office in the City/County Building, 1819 Farnam St., or at the Urban League of Nebraska, 3040 Lake St.
Applications should be submitted to Commissioner Chris Rodgers, c/o Ashley Adams, 1819 Farnam St., Suite LC 2, Omaha, NE 68183.
To qualify, the projects must have cultural or historical relevance. Maps of the eligible area will be available at the County Board offices.
The awards will be announced at 5 p.m. on Dec. 14 at a public meeting at North High School.
Program focuses on hereditary cancer
Kathy Christiansen, a nurse from Methodist Hospital, will discuss cancer and heredity at a Wednesday program that is free to the public.
The program will be “Hereditary Cancer: Is It All in the Family?” Christiansen also will discuss the characteristics of hereditary cancer and the most common hereditary cancers. Cancer prevention will be part of her presentation.
The program will be at 3 p.m. in the theater at Walnut Grove Retirement Community, 4901 S. 153rd St., 1½ blocks north of Q Street. Although the program is free, RSVP to 861-1611.
Councilman to speak at business luncheon
Omaha City Councilman Chris Jerram will be the noon luncheon speaker for the Oct. 28 meeting of the Midtown Business Association.
Reservations, $10, are due Friday for the meeting in the private dining rooms at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Vegas act to perform at Florence City Hall
You don’t have to go to Las Vegas to see an act from there.
The Links will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at Florence City Hall, 2864 State St., east of the Post Office.
Admission is free for Florence Arts and Humanities members and $5 for nonmember adults. Students are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Missouri River topic of Sierra Club meeting
Find out “How to Recover a Healthy Missouri River” at Thursday’s 7 p.m. Sierra Club meeting.
Jim Redmond, Sierra Club’s representative on the Missouri River Restoration Plan Stakeholder Group, will be the speaker. He is from Sioux City, Iowa.
The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will be at First United Methodist Church, 7020 Cass St.
Holiday cooking classes offered
Those looking to upgrade their cooking skills for the coming holiday season can learn a few secrets from a Valley chef.
Classes will be offered Nov. 10 and Nov. 17 at Delicious! Cafe, 215 N. Spruce St. In a group setting, participants will learn to prepare turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and more.
The two classes will run from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Seating is limited. $30 per person.

Art auction fundraiser coming Saturday
“Art, music, food and drink. Who could ask for anything more?” That sums up the River City Mixed Chorus fundraiser “Art for the Taking.”
The group’s fifth annual art auction will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Artworks, 1108 Jackson St., in the Old Market. Tickets, which are $35 for individuals and $50 for couples, are available at: www.rcmc.org.
