Officials at a new south Omaha community center received the keys to the building Tuesday, and now are busy getting the facility ready for its debut next month.
The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center is on pace to open Nov. 16.
This morning, several workers will start moving in furniture, supplies and other equipment.
Tom Folk, director of operations at the center, said the next 10 days will be busy as more than four dozen vendors put the finishing touches on the facility, near 30th and Y Streets.
Numerous televisions, for example, must be installed before exercise equipment can be moved into place, Folk said.
“It's a choreographed pace,” he said. “And hopefully everybody shows up when they are supposed to and not early and not late.”
Workers will finish up some details, such as painting, over the next two weeks. Landscaping crews also have been planting trees, shrubs and perennials throughout the area's green space.
Kiewit Construction Building Group was in charge of construction.
The Kroc Center will have an indoor aquatic center with a zero-depth recreational pool, a 25-yard pool for competitive swimming, a fitness center and a computer lab.
The center was made possible by a $60 million gift from the estate of philanthropist Joan B. Kroc. Half of that money went for construction, and the other half started an operating endowment. Local donors pitched in $15 million.
