NU braces for budget cuts

The University of Nebraska is bracing for likely budget cuts as a result of the upcoming emergency session of the state Legislature to balance the budget.

Already off the table are requests for more state money in the middle of the budget year to:

* Build a new nursing facility at the Lincoln campus;

* Begin development of the Innovation Campus on the former state fairgrounds;

* Make improvements to the Peter Kiewit Institute in Omaha;

* Operate a new joint student information system between NU and state colleges.

"Those are all good ideas, but we are no longer proposing them to the board," said President J.B. Milliken. "We don't have a choice."

Milliken said decisions will be made later on postponing these projects or reallocating money from other purposes to pay for them.
