COUNCIL BLUFFS — When Tim Brezina of Omaha took his children Saturday to the Treat Street fest at the Mid-America Center, he knew they would be getting candy a week before Halloween.
What he didn't know was that they would be driving motorized bathtubs.
It was the second year Brezina's children, Sarah, 5, and Will, 7, attended the event cosponsored by The World-Herald and the Mid-America Center.
“It's hard to find a good place for the kids to be safe and have fun,” Brezina said.
Treat Street is a Halloween-themed event where local businesses hand out candy. It included bounce houses, costume contests and mounds of candy.
The event also featured the Creepy Crafts Castle, where children made Halloween masks; the Pirate Treasure Island Midway, where they played games; and Little Spider Hollow, a special play area for children age 3 and younger.
An estimated 6,000 people attended Treat Street, event coordinator Tam Webb said.
The small motorized bathtubs — from Joe's Karting, an indoor cart-racing business in Council Bluffs — were the most popular attraction.
The line to drive the tubs consisted of children dressed up as cheerleaders, ninjas and bloodthirsty vampires. It spanned halfway across the floor, leading to a gargantuan replica of a slice of cherry pie provided by Village Inn.
“It was fun, but it was pretty fast,” Sarah Brezina said of the tubs.
