Mark and Kristi Lambrecht at their custom glass business in Omaha's Old Market. The Davenport Street residents, both age 57, saw a few slow months this year but say business picked up again and looks good for the coming year.

Barely scratched by the downturn, glass studio ponders its good fortune

Owners of an Old Market stained-glass business launched in their garage, Kristi and Mark Lambrecht, saw no impact from the recession until January.

Then a customer put a major order on hold.

Uh-oh, they thought, what's next? They had just added a fifth employee to their small business and now worried they might not be able to keep him.

But after a few slow months, things started picking up again in May. In fact, the coming year looks good.

“We kept the guy, and now we're looking for another,'' Mark said. “It seems everybody said ‘Let's do it,' decided things were going to be OK.''

Mark concedes that they're a little perplexed by their good fortune. Their biggest customers are churches, which have without doubt felt the downturn in their weekly collections, he said.

“We ponder that a lot.''
