Coach Blake Reynolds is feeling optimistic as the Midland Lutheran women's soccer team gears for the postseason.

The Warriors have won nine straight and can lock up second place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with a win Saturday at defending conference champion Dordt (14-1-1, 8-1-1).

Reynolds said Midland (13-3, 9-2) has been picking up steam since early losses to league leader Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings College.

“We have a very good chance of winning the conference tournament,'' the first-year coach said.

Midland will have a first-round home playoff game Nov. 5.

Two-time All-American Ashley Kirkman leads a sound defense. Junior Kayla Smelker, who leads the team with eight goals and six assists, had a hat trick in a 4-0 win of Sioux Falls last weekend.

“She's an incredible talent,'' Reynolds said of Kirkman.
