TAMPA, Fla. — The winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers have named rookie Josh Freeman as their starting quarterback, benching Josh Johnson.
In other news:
• The Kansas City Chiefs have suspended running back Larry Johnson until Nov. 9. The club is on its bye week so Johnson will miss one game, at Jacksonville on Nov. 8. Johnson used a gay slur twice within a 24-hour period Sunday night and Monday, first on his Twitter account and then again Monday morning after telling reporters that he was not talking.
• Walter Jones has gone on the Seahawks' injured reserve list because of left knee problems, ending the six-time All-Pro left tackle's season and perhaps his illustrious career.
• Running back Brian Westbrook will be a game-time decision for the Philadelphia Eagles against the New York Giants on Sunday after suffering a concussion earlier this week.
• Tommie Harris returned to practice for the Chicago Bears after coach Lovie Smith benched the defensive tackle last week. Harris sat out last week because of his chronic left knee problems.
• San Diego Chargers center Nick Hardwick returned to the practice field for the first time since injuring his left ankle in the season opener, but he isn't expected to play on Sunday.
• New York Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery expects to return from his injured left hamstring and play Sunday against Miami despite being limited in practice.
• Ravens offensive tackle Jared Gaither practiced after missing time with a neck injury, and he is expected to play on Sunday.
• 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown has received a three-year contract extension.
• Cowboys returner Allen Rossum is out two to four weeks because of a hamstring injury.
