The multimillion-dollar renovation of Baker Square shopping center should wrap up by the end of the year, barring weather delays, said an official with the company that owns the center.
The renovation at 132nd Street and West Center Road started with smaller shop exteriors on the east side and the former Bakers Supermarket, where a No Frills Fresh supermarket opened Wednesday.
Now crews are working on the former Stein Mart and Petco storefronts and all the smaller shops on the west side.
Jeff Keating, vice president of PDM, the property management company that owns Baker Square, said PDM is negotiating with a national retailer for the former Stein Mart building.
Its a little bit too early for me to give any more information than that, he said.
Keating said the renovation of the 38-year-old, 160,000-square-foot shopping center is a major revitalization for the neighborhood.
Most center tenants are small businesses, such as a barbershop, Factory Card Outlet and Catherines Plus Sizes clothing store.
Petco and Stein Mart were the largest tenants. Petco relocated in February to L Street Marketplace near 125th and L Streets; Stein Mart closed in May.
