Shooting an early plus for Creighton

Things we learned Saturday while watching Creighton’s public workout at Sokol Arena:

Andrew Bock can really shoot the ball.

Ethan Wragge can really shoot the ball.

Kaleb Korver can ... OK, you get the picture.

Shooting, especially from long range, highlighted the scrimmage that made up most of the two-hour session that drew about 1,000 fans. For the record, the blue team, made up mostly of veterans, defeated the black 106-88.

“We had some guys really shoot the ball well,’’ coach Dana Altman said. “Defensively, we did some good things at times. We have a long ways to go with our consistency, and we need to eliminate the turnovers.”

The Bluejays have until Wednesday to iron out some of their wrinkles. That’s when Creighton faces Missouri Western in the first of two exhibition games that lead up to a Nov. 14 season opener at Dayton.

Saturday’s workout marked the second straight week in which Creighton paraded its team before the public. In addition to a nice change of pace from daily practices, guard Antoine Young said, the workouts provide younger players such as Bock and Wragge a chance to shake loose the jitters.

“It gives you a little experience,’’ Young said. “Last year we didn’t have this, and I came into the Qwest a little blindsided. Playing in front of people should help the young guys out.”

Young has been nursing a sore left (shooting) wrist since taking a hard fall in practice 11 days ago. He aggravated the injury when he tumbled over chairs in the bench area while chasing after a loose ball.

“My wrist is killing me,’’ he said.

There was nothing wrong with Bock’s shooting hand, especially late in the scrimmage. He made five straight shots from beyond the arc, draining his last one from well behind the 3-point line.

NOTES: Forward Chad Millard, sidelined the past five weeks with a foot injury, is out of a protective boot and has resumed light running. He said he hopes to return to practice Monday on a limited basis. ... The A-Hawk is history. Young had been wearing a Mohawk hairstyle since early fall but showed up Saturday with his hair cut. “Mom wasn’t loving it too much,’’ he said, laughing. “Mom’s happy now.’’
