The students, faculty and administration of Omaha Skutt High School have a “Hawktober” tradition called Community Involvement Day.
Instead of classroom learning, everyone leaves Skutt to visit agencies and schools that serve the elderly, children, the disabled and the sick, and those experiencing poverty in the Omaha area.
This day provides students and faculty the opportunity to learn about the people and agencies that serve the needs of the community and then perform service themselves. Students spent time at almost 50 sites.
A partial rundown:
Ÿ Three groups met students with disabilities from Oak Valley Elementary and Omaha Burke High School to take them around the zoo.
Ÿ Three groups went to Habitat for Humanity sites in Omaha, Sarpy County and Council Bluffs.
Ÿ One group paired up with students with disabilities from Millard Young Adult Program to do bus training. They took city buses to Oak View Mall to go shopping and eat lunch.
Ÿ Many Skutt students went to nursing homes, where they visited with residents, did manicures, decorated for Halloween and painted pumpkins with the residents.
Ÿ Several other groups visited elementary schools, helping with reading, flash cards and games.
