HARLAN, Iowa — Curt Bladt didn’t want to know how Sioux City Heelan was doing at halftime, even if his Harlan team was already ahead of Adel-DeSoto-Minburn by four touchdowns in first-round action Monday.
There was plenty else to worry about, the coach said, like keeping players hydrated and working out a plan for taking his starters out of the game. That was about the extent of the drama, as the host Cyclones went on to club ADM 48-0 and set up an anticipated rematch with Heelan (10-1) on Friday.
The Crusaders (10-1) defeated Denison-Schleswig 34-14 Monday. The defending Class 3-A state champions will come to top-ranked Harlan on Friday for the second time this season after the Cyclones beat then 24-6 on Sept. 4.
Now, Bladt said, is when the real challenges begin.
“This is a big fish to fry on Friday,” Bladt said. “These guys (Heelan) have been clobbering people. They wanted to get out of their first-round game as bad as we wanted to get out.”
That desire showed up in methodical drives and big plays for the Cyclones. Harlan racked up 497 total yards, compared with ADM’s 160, a number that included minus-19 rushing yards to Harlan’s 311. Seven Cyclones combined for 186 receiving yards to round out the total.
The Cyclones found the end zone on four of their five first-half possessions in dominating fashion. After intercepting a deep pass from ADM quarterback Gavin Glenn, Harlan senior fullback Matt Hoch capped a five-play drive with a 51-yard touchdown scamper just four minutes into the game.
Following a punt from each team, junior running back Dylan Barrett hurdled into the end zone from 1 yard out. The score was set up by an 18-yard pass from quarterback Michael Kaufmann to Brian Kloewer.
Barrett would score again on a 13-yard scamper after another ADM punt, and Hoch matched him with a 1-yard plunge with 16.7 seconds left in the first half.
ADM — which Harlan defeated 42-14 at home on Sept. 18 — failed to get much of anything going in the rematch. A holding call negated what would have been a 32-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-7 in the second quarter, and the Tigers missed at least one other chance to score when a wide-open receiver dropped a deep pass.
“The most disappointing thing was just the untimely penalties that we seemed to get,” ADM coach Mike Whisner said. “That kind of takes a little momentum away. You’ve got to have plays like that to compete with a team like this.”
Harlan is one win from the state semifinals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The Cyclones won the state title there in 2005 and haven’t returned to the dome since.
“They want to go back — there’s no doubt about that,” Bladt said. “But we’ve got Heelan in front of us that wants it just as bad as we do.
“It’s going to be a dogfight from here on out.”
ADM (7-4) hadn’t scored fewer than 14 points all season, while the shutout was Harlan’s sixth of the season.
