Defensive tackle Jared Crick said he grew up idolizing former Nebraska All-American Jason Peter – no surprise, since Crick was 8 years old and living in Cozad, Neb., during Peter's All-America senior season in 1997.

Now, it's Crick who stars on the defensive line. He's the reigning Big 12 player of the week and national player of the week, as named by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the Football Writers Association of America.

Crick made a single-game, school-record five sacks Saturday and 13 tackles in the Huskers' 20-10 win at Baylor.

Of Peter, Crick said: "How he played the game, that's how I envision myself."

Peter said today that he enjoys watching the teamwork of Crick and fellow tackle Ndamukong Suh. Baylor's focus on stopping Suh with double teams helped allow for Crick's big game against the Bears.

"It's great seeing those two guys out there," Peter said. "It feels, the relationship, like the relationship that Grant and I had. It's a competition. It's a friendly competition, but it's a race to the quarterback to see who can make the next play."

The Huskers practiced for more than two hours today at the Hawks Center.

To update some injuries, I-back Roy Helu continued to work without the the non-contact, green jersey that he wore for the past two weeks. Starting cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was wearing green, though, after re-injuring a shoulder injury against Baylor. Dennard said he was hopeful to play Saturday against Oklahoma.

Tight end Kyler Reed remained out of practice with an injury.

A final note: Receivers Menelik Holt and Curenski Gilleylen continue to practice with the scout team. Looks like the demotion last week of the two starters was more than just a temporary move made as a statement.
