Hawkeyes make offer to Husker’s brother

Millard North coach Fred Petito said he hadn’t seen Cole Fisher really smile since a loss ended the Mustangs’ season last Friday.

He got a reason to grin Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound junior safety, a younger brother of Nebraska redshirt freshman Sean Fisher, received an unofficial scholarship offer Tuesday from Iowa, Petito said.

Petito said the offer comes after highlight tapes were sent out to a number of schools, a reel that both he and the Iowa coaches described as “very impressive.” Offensive line coach Reese Morgan called over shortly after receiving the film and told Petito that something would be in the mail soon.

A letter from head coach Kirk Ferentz arrived Tuesday.

“They just wanted to know if he’d be serious about considering them,” Petito said. “I told them I thought he would. While Nebraska was the place for Sean, it may or may not be the same for Cole.”

Petito said it’s not hard to see what the Hawkeyes liked in Fisher.

“He’s all of 6-3 and he’s a contact guy,” he said. “He’s just a good player.”

Sean Fisher, who has started five games at linebacker for NU, followed a similar route. He was a physical safety at the high school level but was projected by college coaches as a linebacker, a spot he’s fit in well in Lincoln. Cole is expected to make the same transition.

Iowa may be the first in on the younger Fisher, but with serious interest coming in from Nebraska, Notre Dame, Clemson, Colorado and Kansas, the Hawkeyes most likely won’t be the last.

“Iowa’s a Top 5 team in the nation,” Petito said, “so that’s going to get everyone’s attention.”
