Class 4-A: Lynx pounce on rival for berth

ANITA, Iowa — Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln seniors Emily Olsen and Chelsea Colpitts didn’t hide the fact that they were out for revenge against Johnston on Tuesday. And they got it in swift and decisive fashion.

It took only 70 minutes at CAM High School for the Class 4-A No. 7 Lynx to defeat the team that had ended their season each of the past two years. AL (37-11) earned a return trip to the state volleyball tournament with a 25-17, 25-12, 25-15 victory over its arch nemesis in the Region 2 final.

AL will play No. 3 Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Nov. 11 at 2:15 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids in its first-round state tournament match.

“They wanted revenge. I just wanted to win,” Lynx coach Yvonne Carson said.A.L. closed a tight opening set with a 7-0 run and didn’t give up the momentum.

“This is amazing, that’s all I can say,” Colpitts said. “We’ve thought about this since the day the season ended last year.”

Colpitts and Olsen combined for 19 kills and eight service aces. The captains were key contributors on AL’s state-qualifying team in 2007 and on last year’s regional final team, both of which lost to Johnston.

“This was just two years coming out for revenge,” said Olsen, who tallied a match-high 12 kills. “It was really important to all of us. ”

The Lynx advanced to the state tournament for the second time in four years under Carson, who will be making her 13th state appearance as a head coach. She guided Omaha Gross to 11 state tournament berths in Nebraska and won a Class B championship with the Cougars.

“I feel like we can compete,” she said. .”
