OSU defense too much for Huskers

SAN ANTONIO — The Nebraska soccer team gave up two first-half goals and couldn't rally against Oklahoma State, losing 3-0 on Wednesday in the first round of the Big 12 championships.

“The better team won today. That's all there is to it,'' Husker coach John Walker said. “We were poor in the first half. We played a little better in the second half. In the end, it was not good enough.''

Walker said he wasn't optimistic about NU's chances of advancing to the NCAA tournament. Pairings will be announced Monday. “That's my gut feeling,'' he said.

Nebraska (11-5-4) outshot OSU 14-10, including five from senior Shay Powell. Shots on goal were even at five apiece. Powell helped the Huskers to four corner-kick opportunities, but NU was unable to convert against an OSU defense that has five shutouts in the past six games.

The Huskers played without freshman Morgan Marlborough, who was named the Big 12 offensive and rookie player of the year on Wednesday after scoring 21 goals. Walker said she had flu symptoms.

“That's no excuse,'' he said. “We have plenty of other good players. That's just part of the game.''

Senior defender Carly Peetz also was named to the first team. Sophomore midfielder Molly Thomas was chosen for the the second team.

    Oklahoma State 2 1—3

    Nebraska 0 0—0

    Goals: OSU, Langdon, Niemeier, Richardson.
