Rockets take off in 4th quarter

A stagnant Syracuse offense woke up in the fourth quarter as the visiting Rockets scored three touchdowns to turn a 13-6 deficit into a 30-13 win over host Bennington in the Class C-1 playoffs.

Dual threat quarterback Adam Vogt passed for 219 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown to lead the comeback and keep the Rockets undefeated.

All three of Vogt’s touchdown strikes came in the fourth quarter.

Eight of Vogt’s nine completed passes in the game were to Nick Reed, who piled up 189 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

“I don’t know where the first three quarters went,” Vogt said, “but I’m glad we had a fourth.”

And the credit, Vogt said, goes to Reed.

“It was his night,” Vogt said. “He couldn’t drop a ball. I was just throwing it up to him and letting him go get it.”

Syracuse coach Rick Nordhues said Vogt and Reed decided they were ready to take over the game in the fourth quarter.

“They just make plays, you know, and Adam can do it with his arms and his legs, and he proved that tonight,” Nordhues said.

“Nick was calling for the ball. Adam told me, ‘Nick wants the ball. Let’s get it to him.’ So that’s what we did.”

Vogt was just 1-for-6 passing for 31 yards and had 37 yards rushing in the first half. But in the second half, he completed 8 of 10 for 188 yards and rushed for 90.

Bennington coach Greg Bohn said he thought the Badger defense played well despite the late Syracuse attack.

“I tell you what: They had some big plays, and Reed made catches,” Bohn said. “They made plays, and we didn’t make any. That happens.”
