    Air raid leads Monarchs

DAVID CITY, Neb. — On its first play, David City Aquinas passed.

Aquinas threw for its first touchdown. And its second, too.

This from a team that threw once in each of its previous two games because of weather and field conditions.

“We needed to change it up,’’ quarterback Will McCawley said.

Wilber-Clatonia never recovered from the shock Wednesday night, losing 35-8 to the Monarchs in the second round of the Class C-2 playoffs.

The Wolverines, who had taken No. 3 Aquinas (10-0) to overtime in a 26-20 loss in the regular season, never led and became the sixth consecutive opponent to go scoreless against the first unit of the Monarchs’ defense.

“We needed to use the pass to open up the run,’’ Aquinas coach Ron Mimick said. “The safeties have to play you 12 yards back instead of 5 or 6.’’

McCawley’s two scoring throws came in the first half, a 55-yarder to Mitch Maguire and a 7-yarder to Lee Sabata.

Wilber-Clatonia (7-3) made it 14-8 at halftime on a 65-yard punt return by Tanner Zlab.

“I thought that would be the turnaround,’’ first-year Wolverines coach Lynn Jurgens said. “But we couldn’t get anything going on our first drive of the second half and hurt ourselves with poor field position.’’

Aquinas held Wilber to seven first downs and 179 yards while intercepting quarterback Sam Newmyer four times. McCawley had two, with Kalen Vandenburg and Tony Birkel getting the others.

Nate Roh, who ran for 175 yards, scored all three Monarch touchdowns in the second half. They finished with 404 total yards.

“The second half was about defense and getting a couple of short-field touchdowns,’’ Mimick said.
