Norfolk Catholic gives Scouts no room to roam

DAVID CITY, Neb. — Norfolk Catholic's defense and special teams penned up Seth Behrens and his David City teammates for the better part of a 26-8 win in Wednesday's second round of the Class C-1 football playoffs.

David City (8-2) had only five snaps on the Knights' half of the field until the game's final six minutes. The Scouts' average starting position was their 21.

“We were running play-action, misdirection and gadget plays, and I don't know if you win a playoff game with that,'' David City coach Cortney Couch said. “We mixed up our blocking schemes, but their front six get it done.''

No. 2 Norfolk Catholic (10-0) got three touchdown passes from senior quarterback Austin Ketter, the final two in the third quarter to open a 26-0 lead.

Ketter, who was 10 of 17 for 175 yards, completed a 16-play drive with a 4-yard toss to Tyler Habrock, then went for paydirt on a 40-yarder to leading rusher Kelby Seyl on the first play of the next series.

“We saw some things we could attack, and the weather was nicer than it's been,'' Knights coach Jeff Bellar said, “so we were able to get our quarterback and receivers involved.''

Norfolk Catholic led 12-0 at halftime on field goals of 43 and 27 yards by sophomore Drew Farlee and a 34-yard touchdown strike from Ketter to split end Ethan Brozek.

Behrens, who broke David City's school record for rushing yards in a season, ran for 75 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries to end his junior season with more than 1,700 yards.

“I'm not happy with how the story ended, but what a story we had to tell,'' Couch said. “With an eight-game winning streak between bookend losses and a district title, I'm not sure how many expected that.''
