When Curt Kirkwood got sick as a child, his parents brought him back to their hometown: Omaha.
Kirkwood had a kidney removed at Children’s Hospital and he spent about a year here recovering and attending Sunset Hills Elementary School, 9503 Walnut St.
During that time, they lived with his grandparents. His grandfather, Carl Renstrom, owned Tip Top Products, whose factory has now been converted to apartments near 16th and Cuming Streets.
The Renstrom home, where Kirkwood lived, still stands at 10001 Pacific St., but a farm that Renstrom owned has since been divided up and turned into One Pacific Place and other developments in that area.
