Born Aug. 31, 1945, in Tel Aviv, British Mandate of Palestine, now Israel.
Contracted polio at age 4 and walks with crutches.
Studied violin at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv before moving to New York City to study with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School. Perlman now teaches at Juilliard as DeLay’s successor.
Appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1958 as a 13-year-old prodigy.
Won the Levintritt Competition in 1964.

Honorary doctorates: Harvard, Yale, Roosevelt, Yeshiva and Hebrew Universities.
Recorded the soundtrack to “Schindler’s List” in 1993; it won the Academy Award for best film score.
Received Medal of Liberty from President Reagan in 1986.
Received National Medal of Arts from President Clinton in 2000.
Received Kennedy Center Honors in 2003.
Married to Toby Perlman, a classically trained violinist.
Five children: Noah, Navah (a concert pianist), Leora, Rami (of the rock band Something for Rockets) and Ariella.
