    MEN'S BASKETBALL

    Bluejays land another big man

The Bluejays have landed a blue-collar prospect.

Keithrick Denson, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound sophomore at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana, Texas, said Friday he has decided to accept Creighton’s scholarship offer and will sign a letter of intent Wednesday.

In a telephone interview, Denson said he relishes doing basketball’s dirty work.

“I try to play a lot of defense, I look to block shots and I like to rebound,’’ Denson said. “Offensively, I can run the floor. My low post moves were not up to par last year, but they’ve gotten a whole lot better.

“I don’t know how they intend to use me, but I’ll have no problem adjusting to whatever they want me to do. I’ll work hard whatever situation they put me in.’’

Denson compiled modest numbers (4.3 points and 4.0 rebounds) in playing a backup center role last season for a Navarro team that advanced to the junior college national tournament. He did block 43 shots in 32 games.

Denson has scored 16 points in Navarro’s first two games this season.

A Houston native, Denson said he also had scholarship offers from Louisiana Tech and Georgia State. Iowa State and Texas Christian also were recruiting him, Denson said, but none of the schools stood a chance once he made his official visit to Creighton.

“I pretty much had it figured out once I got back from my visit,’’ said Denson, who made the trip to Omaha two weeks ago. “I really liked what coach (Dana) Altman and coach (Brian) Fish had to say, and the guys were great.

“They welcomed me with open arms. The fact that they already have a guy from Houston on the team helped. I got to talk to him and he said he loved it there.’’

The other Houstonian is Darryl Ashford, a junior-college transfer in his first season in the program.

“We really didn’t know each other back home,’’ Denson said, “but we both had heard a lot about each other.’’

Denson is the second player to make an oral commitment to the Bluejays. Will Artino, a 6-11 senior at Waukee, Iowa, High School, committed during the summer.
