Cabela's unveiled plans today to invest $10 million to $15 million in constructing a 16,000-square-foot data center that will create up to 20 new jobs at the Papillion Business and Technology Park.
The data center will be built over the next year and should open around January 2011, the company announced Friday.
But that's not all.
For the first time, the Sidney, Neb., outdoor outfitter disclosed it has loftier expansion plans in the works for Sarpy County in the coming years.
The company said it also wants to open a separate technology development center, with up to 50,000 square feet and room for 100 work stations. That facility would be located on adjacent land the company recently acquired for its new data center.
That technology development center could begin with 20 to 50 employees, including computer programmers and other information technology specialists.
No date for construction of the technology development center has been determined, Cabela's said.
"Our investment in this world-class information technology complex in Papilllion will provide our employees with the tools and technology to affect continuous improvement across the Cabela's enterprise," said Tommy Millner, Cabela's chief executive officer.
On hand was Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, who praised Cabela's.
"I'm very, very proud of them," Heineman said. "This is very, very significant because this is the future."
The governor said the data center will provide decent-paying information technology jobs to help keep younger families and students in Nebraska.
The Cabela's data center in Papillion will provide technology support for the company's business operations, which include catalogs, e-commerce sites and 30 retail stores in the U.S. and Canada. The company said it selected Papillion because of its competitive power rates, friendly business climate as well as the prime location that offers room for expansion.
The company would be the sixth entity to locate inside Papillion's business park. Other tenants include the Papillion Police Department, Heartland Family Services and InfoUSA.
A few months ago, Pentagon Federal Credit Union became a tenant as a result of the company's expansion from its Omaha branch.
