Metro-area parades will salute veterans
Two parades in the Omaha metro area on Saturday will salute veterans and Veterans Day.
“Got Freedom? Thank a Vet” is the theme this year of the annual parade in Council Bluffs. It begins at 11 a.m. at the corner of Second Street and West Broadway, then will travel on Broadway to Pearl Street, pass the Bayliss Park Veterans Memorial Plaza and end at the Pottawattamie County Courthouse.
Bands, Scouts and floats — as well as Civil War re-enactors, old military vehicles and even an Elvis Presley impersonator circa “GI Blues” — will be featured.
Also on hand will be members of the Council Bluffs-based Iowa National Guard, who were recently told to be ready for deployment to the Middle East next year.
The second parade, in Bellevue, will begin at 10 a.m. at Jackson Street and move along Mission Avenue in Olde Town.
The Bellevue Public Schools and the Bellevue-Offutt Air Force Base community will pay tribute to U.S. men and women in uniform.
The Bellevue East and Bellevue West High marching bands, JROTC, students from all grade levels and the district's transportation department will be part of the parade. Units from Offutt and the National Guard and war veterans also will be featured.
Neighborhood Center goes after graffiti
The Neighborhood Center's first graffiti cleanup day is set for Saturday.
Participants in the two-hour event will tackle markings identified through the Neighborhood Center's Graffiti Scan Project.
Volunteers should meet at 1 p.m. at Metropolitan Community College's South Campus in the Connector Building for assignments and cleaning supplies.
Mayor Jim Suttle, City Councilman Garry Gernandt and members of the Association of Latino-American Students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha will be among the volunteers.
The Graffiti Scan Project provides hand-held GPS units to neighborhood leaders and volunteers, who use them to photograph and record the location of graffiti.
The Neighborhood Center and UNO analyzed the findings and will provide maps that direct volunteers to the graffiti locations.
The project is supported by grants from the City of Omaha and Wells Fargo Bank.
