A delegation from Shanghai, China, including Vice Mayor Xiaoming Shen, visited the University of Nebraska Medical Center in October.
Shen, a former president of Shanghai Second Medical University, now Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, helped establish a collaborative agreement between that school and UNMC in 2004. In addition to the cooperation between the two medical schools, the effort has also forged ties between Nebraska and Shanghai, said Dr. Jialin Zheng, director of UNMC's Asia Pacific Rim Development Program.
Shen visited the Biocontainment Unit in the Nebraska Medical Center's University Tower, the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education and the Nebraska Public Health Lab. He also met with Gov. Dave Heineman.
One of the highlights of the delegation's visit was a dinner at Joslyn Art Museum's Fountain Court on Oct. 19, hosted by UNMC Chancellor Harold Maurer and his wife, Beverly.
Also in attendance were the students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine who are studying at UNMC this semester and Omaha community leaders.
