Technology is important to Tim Guthrie, 44, a professor of graphic design at Creighton University. Guthrie is also an artist who uses mixed media, such as painting, animation and video. His five favorite things:
1. Video camera
The high-definition digital video camera captures shots for both art and backpack journalism projects.
2. Honda Insight
Averaging about 55 mpg, it was the most fuel-efficient car he could find. It gets him around town and all over the country for art projects.
3. Record player
“I've started buying vinyl again. I have so many CDs that I had to build racks that go up against my ceiling.” This turntable converts vinyl records to MP3s. Guthrie has a 1 terabyte hard drive that is solely for digital copies of his music.
4. Apple laptop
“I use it for everything,” he said, including grading student assignments and editing video.
“It's my gaming device. I access e-mail and the Web on it. I draw on it. Sometimes I have to remind myself that it's a phone.”
