311’s first show was at Sokol Auditorium, opening for Fugazi on June 10, 1990.
311 released three independent records on its own label, What Have You Records, in 1990 and 1991. The records — “Dammit,” “Hydroponic” and “Unity” — are very hard to find.
311 is an Omaha police code for indecent exposure. Bassist P-Nut and some friends were caught skinny dipping in a public pool and were apprehended by police.
Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney and Chad Sexton all attended Westside High School. SA Martinez and P-Nut Wills attended Bryan High School. The two groups started to come together when Chad and SA met at the University of Nebraska.
While on the road supporting its 1993 major-label debut, “Music,” the band’s RV caught fire and exploded, destroying all their equipment, clothes and personal possessions.
Over nine studio albums, the band had seven albums reach the Billboard Top 10. The highest-charting is their most recent, “Uplifter,” which reached No. 3.
The band’s best-selling album, the self-titled “311,” sold more than 3 million records.
