KEARNEY, Neb. -- A jury will decide whether a former Kearney High School coach provided alcohol for a minor.

The misdemeanor trial against Shane Nordby, 37, was scheduled to begin today in Buffalo County Court. He is accused of providing alcohol for a then-17-year-old Sidney girl, and with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The alleged incident took place at Nordby's Kearney home between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Dec. 23, 2008. Nordby has denied the allegations.

A jury of six will determine his fate. Judge Gerry Jorgensen is presiding over the case.

Deputy Buffalo County Attorney Mandi Schweitzer is prosecuting Nordby, while Hastings attorney Richard Alexander is defending him.

If convicted, Nordby faces up to one year in jail on each count. He is free on bond.

At the time Nordby was cited he was a third-grade teacher at Bryant Elementary in Kearney and an assistant junior varsity volleyball and track coach at Kearney High School. However, in February, Nordby resigned those positions.
