Homeless vets offered stand-down

The Associated Press

A hot meal and some medical care will be available in Omaha soon for homeless veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System is sponsoring the “stand-down” at the Omaha Civic Center from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The free services available that day will include health screening, eye exams, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health services and foot care.

There will be some free clothing available, and a hot meal will be served.

VA and other agencies and organizations will have representatives at the event.

“Stand-down” is a military term for when troops are pulled back from the front lines so they can rest and recuperate.
