Founded in 1941 during World War II by a British shipping magnate and German-born educator to give sailors experiences necessary to survive at sea.
Exists in more than 30 countries, including the U.S. There are eight urban centers, and Expeditionary Learning Schools have a presence in 160 elementary, middle and high schools in 29 states, including Iowa. Wilderness programs draw 30,000 participants a year.
Recently began wilderness programs for U.S. veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and will serve 1,500 this year, 2,000 in 2010.
