Farragut Cemetery beautification

FARRAGUT, Iowa — For the past three years, plans to beautify the Farragut Cemetery have been under way.

Seed money for the various tasks has finally been gathered, but private donations are needed to ensure the projects are completed.

Joyce Supernaw, Farragut Cemetery board member, said all the projects slated for the area will cost about $30,000 and will be done in phases.

“We’ve already planted some Columnar Norway spruce trees along the east end, but there’s plenty more left to do,” Supernaw said.

Included in the plans are eight brick columns spaced along the front of the cemetery, as well as black wrought-iron fence sections and a sign designating it as the Farragut Cemetery.

“We also need to repair the cannon and military area that is used each Memorial Day,” Supernaw said.

“We’d like to put a granite base under it,” Supernaw added. “But it’s very expensive.”

Although managed by the City of Farragut, the cemetery has a four-person board of directors — Supernaw, Staci Scroggie, Don Bateman and John Anderzhon — and a Farragut City Council member, Lonnie Koch, who help with the operation of the cemetery.

In order for donations to the cemetery to be tax deductible, Supernaw said the Cemetery Board has teamed with the Greater Shenandoah Foundation.

Donations may be sent to the Farragut Cemetery Board, Farragut City Hall, Box 241, Farragut, IA 51639.

Checks need to be payable to the Greater Shenandoah Foundation.

“Any donation amount is appreciated,” she said.
