An attorney who has served as a magistrate judge's law clerk since 2001 has been chosen to replace her former boss as the next U.S. magistrate judge for the District of Nebraska.
Cheryl Renae Zwart, 51, will succeed Magistrate Judge David Piester, who retired in August, according to a press release sent out this morning by the U.S. District Court.
Zwart, who lives in Lincoln, was born in Sioux Falls, S.D. She graduated summa cum laude in 1980 from the University of South Dakota and graduated with high distinction from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1988.
Zwart focused on civil litigation while working at the Knudsen Law Firm of Lincoln as associate and partner until 2001. She also served as a mediator in personal injury, contract and employment disputes.
While working at the firm, Zwart served as an adjunct professor at the NU College of Law, teaching civil clinic and pretrial litigation courses.
As a law clerk for Piester, Zwart has drafted memoranda, orders and reports and recommendations in civil and criminal cases. She also has continued to work at the law school, teaching pretrial litigation, remedies and trial advocacy. She was one of five people recommended to the court for consideration from a pool of 23 applicants.
Zwart's selection is subject to the completion of the required FBI and IRS background checks, which are expected to take about three months to complete. She will take office in Lincoln soon after the successful completion of the checks, the press release said.
