NU’s freshman guard shows savvy of veteran

LINCOLN — Nebraska’s smooth-operating freshman point guard looks like she’s been doing this for a while.

In her first game at NU, Lindsey Moore recorded eight assists in 23 minutes, directing an efficient Husker offense that took command early Friday night in an 86-62 win over Davidson.

Due in large part to Moore’s guidance, Nebraska (1-0) made all nine of its shots in the first six minutes, jumping out to a 22-6 lead. The Huskers did cool down, finishing the game with a 45.6 field goal percentage, but won easily before 2,356 in the Devaney Center.

It was no big deal for Moore, who also added five points in her debut. Moore, who unveiled a few no-look passes even in some halfcourt sets, said she shook all of the jitters out during the exhibition season.

“It’s really easy, honestly, to play with everyone on our team,” said Moore, who joined NU this summer. “It was a really easy transition.”

Moore scored the first basket of the game five seconds in when she pulled up for a short jumper from about eight feet away.

She attempted only three other shots the rest of the half, but she dished out seven assists. She added one more assist after halftime to finish with the most for a Husker since Feb. 27, 2008.

And on a night when Nebraska finished with 25 turnovers, Moore was responsible for just one. That’s what caught NU coach Connie Yori’s attention.

“That’s pretty impressive for a freshman in her opening start,” Yori said. “Lindsey’s got tremendous floor vision. She obviously sees things that most freshmen don’t see.”

After Moore led Nebraska’s offensive barrage to open the game, Davidson (0-1) never got closer than 11 points.

The Huskers didn’t miss a field goal until senior Yvonne Turner’s 3-point attempt bounced off the rim with about 14 minutes left in the first half.

Monica Laune, a native of Ashland, Neb., scored 10 points for the Wildcats, who struggled to find any sort of offensive rhythm before halftime. They turned the ball over 16 times and had 26 points, trailing by 20 at the break.

“I didn’t expect us to pounce on them the way we did … but it was kind of fun to watch,” Yori said.

Davidson had made at least one 3-point attempt in 250 consecutive games, a streak that spanned more than eight years. But the Wildcats missed all three of their 3-pointers Friday night.

Nebraska junior Kaitlyn Burke, who sat out the exhibition season after foot surgery, played 13 minutes and scored seven points.
