A kitten who proved elusive Thursday found its way to safety overnight by crawling into a trap set by its rescuers.
An animal control officer was headed to the trap early Friday to retrieve the kitten and take it to the Nebraska Humane Society, said spokeswoman Pam Weise. After the kitten's health is evaluated, she said, it could go to a foster home until it is ready for adoption.
Rescue efforts began with a call from two kids on a cold Thursday night: A kitten was stuck in an underground pipe leading into an abandoned building.
The report roused the Nebraska Humane Society, which called in help from a Ralston plumbing company.
Roto-Rooter employees cut the above-ground section of the teal pipe from its height outside the building of three or four feet to the ground so the cat could climb out. They used shovels to dig a few feet into the ground and simplify the cat's way out. They then snaked a rope camera through the pipes, looking for the kitten.
After searching to the back of the building at 2740 N. 84th St., the crews found no sign of the cat.
They placed food and a cage to capture the trapped kitten near where they dug, said Mark Langan, vice president of field operations for the Humane Society.
Officials called off the search late Thursday but planned to resume it by 7 or 7:30 a.m. today. That plan changed when someone notified the Humane Society that the kitten had found its way into the trap.
