Latinos to honor leaders, students

Several community leaders are to be honored today at the 10th annual Heartland Latino Leadership Conference.

The all-day conference is at the Embassy Suites in La Vista. Academic scholarships also will be awarded to Latino youths and adults. Since its inception, the conference has awarded more than $115,000 in scholarships.

Award recipients and their area of contributions:

Ÿ Jose and Linda Garcia, founders of Las Artes Cultural Center in Omaha, arts and humanities award.

Ÿ Antonio Morales, owner of Panaderia Nietos in Omaha, business and economic development award.

Ÿ Ricardo Ariza, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Creighton University, education award.

Ÿ Josie Rodriguez, South Omaha Community Care Council, government award.

Ÿ Dr. José de Jesús Villegas Mendoza, Omaha volunteer in various public health efforts, health and human services award.

Ÿ Barbara Velazquez, coordinator of International/Intercultural education at Metropolitan Community College, “Latino Partner of the Year” award.

Ÿ Juan Gomez Carbajal, Central High graduate studying at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, youth leadership award.

Ÿ Andres Gamboa, Grand Island Senior High School, youth leadership award.
