    FOOTBALL

    Quarter by quarter

    FIRST QUARTER

    • Tim Marlowe: The redshirt freshman gets Nebraska off to a good start by returning the opening kickoff 40 yards to the NU 42.

    • Zac Lee: In his first start in three weeks, the NU quarterback throws a 35-yard pass to Niles Paul on the first play from scrimmage. The Huskers have first-and-10 at the Kansas 23.

    • Roy Helu: Lee has a chance to score on an option play but fumbles into the end zone. Helu pounces on it for a Husker touchdown and 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

    • Paul: Nebraska is backed up to its 5 but escapes with the help of a 37-yard pass from Lee to Paul.

    • Prince Amukamara: The Huskers hold KU without a first down for the third straight possession, with Amukamara blitzing from his cornerback spot to record a 9-yard sack of Todd Reesing on third down.

    SECOND QUARTER

    • Lee: The junior produces back-to-back big plays, running 32 yards on a bootleg and following with a 37-yard pass to Paul. NU has first-and-goal at the 9.

    • Alex Henery: The Huskers own a 10-0 lead when Henery connects on a 25-yard field goal with 10:47 left before halftime.

    • Toben Opurum: Kansas twice encounters fourth-and-1, and the freshman tailback comes through with runs of 5 and 3 yards in Husker territory.

    • Reesing: The Jayhawks strike when Reesing rolls to his right, cuts back and runs for a 5-yard touchdown. The NU lead is cut to 10-7 after the 13-play, 80-yard drive.

    • Jacob Branstetter: KU puts together a 12-play drive this time, but the clock becomes a factor and Branstetter kicks a 33-yard field goal on the last play of the half to make it 10-10.

    THIRD QUARTER

    • Dejon Gomes: Kerry Meier beats the Nebraska defensive back, but Gomes recovers to poke the football loose after a 16-yard play. Matt O’Hanlon recovers at the Husker 4 to thwart KU’s trip into the red zone.

    • Paul: The big day continues for Paul with a 45-yard reception that takes Nebraska to the KU 11.

    • Keith Williams: The Huskers’ impressive march is sidetracked when a first-down play includes a tripping penalty on Williams, the NU left guard. Now it’s first-and-25 from the 26.

    • Henery: A 34-yard field goal by Henery gives Nebraska the lead at 13-10 with 3:42 left in the third.

    • Lee: Nebraska keeps its last drive of the third quarter alive as Lee scrambles for 14 yards on third-and-5.

    FOURTH QUARTER

    • Henery: One more field goal from the junior, a 38-yarder, and Nebraska owns a 16-10 advantage with 11:53 to go.

    • Reesing: Kansas strikes back as Reesing throws completions of 19, 15, 10 and 21 yards — the last of those to Dezmon Briscoe for the touchdown that gives the Jayhawks their first lead at 17-16 at the 7:34 mark.

    • Justin Thornton: KU apparently has Nebraska stopped on third-and-14, but Thornton is called for a face-mask penalty as he drags down Khiry Cooper after a short reception. First down Huskers at the Kansas 20.

    • Helu: NU regains the lead as Helu bursts through the line and scores on a 20-yard run with 6:19 to go. Lee throws to Paul for the 2-point conversion, and the Huskers make it 24-17.

    • Helu: The offensive line is taking control now as a 74-yard clinching drive is accomplished with 10 runs. Helu has the last of those with a 14-yard carry for the 31-17 margin with 29 seconds left.
